Updated September 24, 2026. GCash is a landmark Philippine fintech business. Its parent company, Mynt, reached a documented $5 billion valuation in 2024 and is preparing a potentially record-setting Philippine IPO. BlackRock is among the institutional investors named for the proposed share sale. The Ayala and MUFG round established $5 billion in 2024. A separate September 2026 report describes IPO cornerstone pricing that implies about $7 billion; the final offer price is still pending.
Quick answer: “Pentacorn” commonly means a private startup valued at $5 billion or more, so Mynt met the threshold in 2024. The IPO’s up-to-₱10 per-share price is preliminary and could imply a higher valuation, but it is neither a completed transaction nor a final market capitalization. GCash is the consumer service; Mynt is the company whose shares investors value.
Is a pentacorn worth $7 billion?
A unicorn reaches $1 billion, a pentacorn $5 billion, a decacorn $10 billion and a hectocorn $100 billion. These are informal startup terms. A $7 billion company would qualify as a pentacorn, but $7 billion is not the threshold. Private-round valuation, target IPO price and listed market capitalization measure different things.
GCash’s verified valuation timeline
| When | Milestone | Valuation evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 | GCash starts as an SMS-based money transfer service | No published valuation |
| 2015 | Mynt is founded | No comparable published valuation |
| 2017 | Ant Financial and Ayala join Globe’s Mynt partnership | Investment, but no verified $100 million opening value |
| January 2021 | Bow Wave and existing backers invest more than $175 million | Close to $1 billion post-money for final tranches |
| November 2021 | Warburg Pincus, Insight Partners and Bow Wave lead a $300 million-plus round | More than $2 billion |
| August 2024 | Ayala adds to its stake; MUFG Bank agrees to buy 8% | $5 billion |
| October 2024 | Mitsubishi Corporation agrees to indirect stake via Ayala vehicle | Separate ownership transaction, no new $7 billion round |
| September 2026 | PSE approves a proposed IPO at up to ₱10 per share | Preliminary price, no final public valuation |
We could not verify an early $100 million valuation from the company or exchange disclosures, so the timeline does not invent that starting figure. The documented progression is close to $1 billion in early 2021, over $2 billion later that year, and $5 billion in 2024. InsiderPH reports a ₱6.60 cornerstone price that would imply roughly ₱442 billion, or about $7 billion at an approximate ₱63-to-$1 exchange rate, using some 66.9 billion post-offer shares. That reported pricing signal is distinct from the completed 2024 round and remains subject to the final offer terms. At the proposed ₱10 price ceiling, Reuters calculated an indicative value of about ₱669 billion; this is a scenario, not a settled value. The PSE says the final price is due October 1, with a tentative October 20 listing.
Which investors built the business?
- Globe Telecom and Ayala Corporation: domestic long-term backers. Ayala expanded its holding as part of the 2024 transaction.
- Ant Financial, now Ant Group: joined the 2017 strategic partnership with Globe and Ayala.
- Bow Wave Capital: invested with existing shareholders in January 2021 and participated again that November.
- Warburg Pincus, Insight Partners, Itai Tsiddon and Amplo Ventures: named in the November 2021 round alongside Bow Wave, Globe and Ayala.
- Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group: through MUFG Bank, agreed to acquire an 8% stake in the 2024 deal. Mitsubishi Corporation is a separate Japanese company; its later indirect interest through Ayala should not be confused with MUFG.
- BlackRock, T. Rowe Price and FIL Investment Management (Hong Kong): among more than 20 reported cornerstone investors for the pending IPO. That is a prospective share purchase, not participation in the 2024 private round.
Which Fidelity? Reuters names FIL Investment Management (Hong Kong), an entity associated with Fidelity International. InsiderPH calls it Fidelity Investments. These are separate businesses, as Fidelity itself explains. Until the investing entity is confirmed in accessible offer documents, CyberCode identifies it by the reported legal name and does not attribute the commitment to the US brokerage.
What value does GCash bring?
Payments and access. Users can send money, pay merchants and billers, purchase load and access partner savings, insurance, investing and lending services through a phone. For households, freelancers and people without a convenient bank branch, that can reduce the friction of daily transactions. Mynt says its network includes more than six million partner merchants and social sellers; this is a company figure, not a count of daily active merchants.
Tools for small businesses. QR acceptance, web payments and disbursements can help sellers move beyond cash and keep transaction records. GCash’s MSME offering shows how the business connects consumers, merchants and financial-service partners.
Commercial scale. Reported 2025 gross transaction value of roughly ₱17 trillion represents payments flowing through the platform; it is not Mynt’s revenue or profit. The financial case rests on sustainable earnings, customer trust and the quality of its payments and financial products, rather than the pentacorn label alone.
The future: IPO, growth and trust
The proposed IPO could raise capital for product development and digital financial services while allowing existing holders to sell some shares. The PSE-approved plan covers up to 8.03 billion primary and secondary shares. Only primary shares inject new proceeds into Mynt. The offer price, allocation, investor demand and actual listing remain pending; calling it a completed $7 billion deal or a $10 billion public company would be premature.
As it grows, the harder test is reliable access, transparent fees, fraud handling, customer redress, responsible credit and data protection. CyberCode’s guides to financial consumer protection under RA 11765 and SIM-swap fraud explain practical rights and risks behind the valuation story.
Sources and valuation note
This timeline relies on Globe’s 2021 disclosure, Warburg Pincus’s funding announcement, Mynt’s 2024 statement and the PSE’s 2026 IPO approval. The BlackRock commitment and indicative price-ceiling valuation come from Reuters’ review of the preliminary prospectus. Terms may change before the offering.
